1971年，年輕的女歌手 Lori Lieberman 蘿莉李柏蔓，偶然的在洛杉磯一家名為「Troubadour 遊唱詩人」的小劇場裡，聽見了民謠歌手 Don McLean 唐麥克林的演唱，當場為之傾倒。靈感一來，順手拿起紙巾，在上頭寫了一首詩，記錄下此刻的心靈悸動。後來，她告訴參與唱片製作的詞曲搭檔 Norman Gimbel 諾曼金柏和 Charles Fox 查理福克斯。兩人根據她的敘述和那首詩，寫出了一首歌，把她的詩句” Killing me softly with his blues “改為” Killing me softly with his song “，讓她灌唱這首歌” Killing me softly “。1972年專輯推出後，未受到注意，倒是當紅的黑人女歌手 Roberta Flack 蘿貝塔.佛蕾克愛上了它，買下翻唱版權。重新灌唱，歌名改為” Killing me softly with his song “，1973 年發行。
